In this interview, I consult with the holistic veterinarian, Dr. Christine King. We use my 17-year-old horse as an example and review the many options available for the senior horse owner.

Nature always wins...

“That's my approach to veterinary medicine these days: Nature always wins in the end, so we might as well follow its lead and save ourselves a whole lot of trouble.

"Nature's (bumbling) Apprentice" is another name for this adventure, because it's
a road less traveled, and the only reliable road map I've found isn't a map at all; it's nature itself, in all its weird and wonderful ways.”

Dr. Christine King

Dr. Christine King is an Australian veterinarian, now based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. King’s Aussie credentials are the equivalent of DVM, DipABVP (equine), MS.

During Dr. King’s career, She worked in private practice, university teaching hospitals, clinical research, and publishing. Still, after all that, Dr. King states that she is simply a girl who loves animals and other living things.

The first 6 years of Dr. King’s career were spent in private practice in Australia, working first in a rural mixed-animal practice and later in an equine hospital. From 1991 to 1994 she worked as a resident veterinarian at Veterinary Teaching Hospitals in Australia (University of Sydney) and the US (North Carolina State University).

After leaving NCSU  Dr. King took a break from active practice and worked as a veterinary medical writer and editor for several years. It proved to be a very productive time, because during those years she learned the ropes of the publishing industry and she wrote her first three books.

The concept of Tail Lights was created by accident. Literally.

On a cool November evening, Sami, the founder of Tail Lights, and her friend were riding both of Sami's horses back to the barn.  Despite living in an equestrian community and using reflectors, Sami's horse and her friend were struck by a car.  It was a hit and run.

Although her friend was thankfully unharmed, her horse Afar was not.  Thousands of dollars later in veterinarian expenses Sami made it her mission to design and develop the most advanced safety lighting system for horses the world has ever seen.

That is how Tail Lights, the product, was born. She wanted a bright, versatile, tough, yet beautiful way to make her and any others horses' presence on the road known.

"I was lucky. Each year thousands of horses and riders are injured and with some killed from automobile encounters. Another horse or rider should never be injured again because of lack of visibility.

My horse survived, but now he has chronic arthritis in both his back legs and cannot be ridden. We have great walks together now, and I am grateful to have that seeing so many others have lost their partners in similar instances.

I personally designed, developed, and tested Tail Lights to be highly visible, comfortable, and restriction free for most horses to wear. They are even water resistant - meaning yes, you can hose them off.  They are gorgeous with many colors to choose from." - Sami Gros

Over the last 25 years the same problem has been brought to Ed Crothers, Equine Analyst, over and over. A well-trained horse that has won numerous competitions and awards or that has been a wonderful riding partner has developed a bad attitude. This good horse has gone bad. What to do about a good horse gone bad? Suddenly the owner cannot control the horse like they used to. Every riding session becomes a fight the joy of riding slips away.

Many times the horse is taken to a trainer to be corrected and while at the trainer the horse seems to be better for a time and then after returning home the "Bad Horse" comes out again.

Other times the horse is turned out to the pasture in hopes that a little off time will bring the "Good Horse"back. Many times the horse never returns to the riding partner that they came to love, sometimes the horse is never ridden again.

This is where the "Good Horse Gone Bad" philosophy comes in. Ed Crothers philosophy is centered around the well-trained horses that developed a bad attitude. The reasons behind the attitude change are fully explored and corrections are made. Many times the problems are solved and the "Good Horse" returns by the end of a session.u

Texas Haynets will help horse and livestock owners save money, keep their hay clean and their animals healthier! Although it was originally created to help with nutritional needs, it saves a considerable amount of money. Designed for 5' to 6' round bales, but can be used for smaller bales too. Net has 1.75" holes and is made from a 3 mm heavy-duty marine-grade polypropylene with UV protection.

Suitable for all grass eating or grazing livestock like cattle, Llama, Alpaca, sheep or goats, provided they DO NOT have horns. Depending on your livestock's eating habits and local conditions, these nets hold up very well in adverse conditions. They should retain their structural integrity for a minimum of 1 year and can last as long as 3-4 years.

The Texas Haynet, in many cases, will slow down fast and aggressive eaters, allowing their systems to adjust to a more normal rate of consumption. It will keep them occupied longer and will aide in preventing boredom and vices. It is also an ideal situation for insulin-resistant horses. Additionally, it will allow timid animals to feed alongside more aggressive one's, keeping the aggressor "working for" their food while allowing the timid animal to get the nutrition they need. An ideal tool to reduce "hay bellies," help overweight horses lose weight and allow thinner, and "hard keeper" horses to put on the weight they need at a healthier rate. Listen to Merideth Perry as she explains the benefits of the Texas HAYNET.

Boomer Equestrians face many challenges as they age. Leaping into the saddle is no longer a reality. Boomers don't bounce when they hit the ground, as Roy Rogers said, they splatter. These realities don't lessen the love we have for horses and the desire to continue to ride.

The most inspiring video I've seen was the Schleese Saddle video of 93-year-old Elsa cantering around the ring on her horse. I watched the video a few weeks after my heart attack. Elsa's riding motivated me to get healthy,  continue to ride and fulfill my bucket list dream of camping with my horse. My intention for Boomer Equestrians is to share information that will help older riders stay safe and comfortable while interacting with horses.

Feeling free. Feeling connected to your horse. That is the heart and soul of riding.

Yet riders struggle to be centered and calm on her horse.

The rider fights the battle by yet again adjusting her position - but the moment her attention goes elsewhere - she instantly returns to how she was sitting before.

In Heather Beachum's unique, online program, “Effortless Riding System,” the results for the rider is a transformation in the evenness and ease in the saddle, feel for the horse, and ability to softly absorb the horse’s motion.

As a lifelong rider and movement professional Heather created her program, “Effortless Riding System,” so every rider can head to the barn knowing that her horse finds their time together fun and rewarding, and that every rides finishes with a sense of accomplishment!

Ruth Buchannan Artist Extraordinaire

My principal focus as an artist is structure, form and anatomy; musculature and movement and the way the fall of light transforms the ordinary, everyday and commonplace into the extraordinary. In this, it is the equine form that most motivates me.

I am driven to draw and paint by a sense of unease if I don’t. I am constantly looking at skies, landscapes, perspectives and light play when riding, walking or driving. For me, the best compliments given about my paintings are that people can hear the creak of leather, the thud of hooves; smell the soft, sweet scents of horse and earth, and, from the corner of their eye, catch a hint of movement about to happen. Listen to Ruth Buchannan artist extraordinaire.
